I'm Dr. Ronald Boggs D.C. and I survived a medicare audit. I'd like to share my success with you.
In November of 2008 I was notified by CMS that I was the target of a CERT review. CMS requested countless dates of service for several of my patients serviced from six to nine months back. My office had to submit 411 pages of documentation to CMS. In the end guess what?

Our profession has a 67% error rate. That translates into a high probability that you aren't documenting properly.
Medicare Fact #1: Chiropractic has one of the highest documentation error rates in healthcare.
We are targets for Medicare audits for two reasons. Nobody has agreed on what the audit standards should be and what makes for "good" record keeping. Secondly, audits are often conducted by professionals who though in noble professions are not chiropractors. Maybe they are nurses or other medical personnel--or consultants. Smart though they be, they don't possess a keen understanding of the standards chiropractors follow--nor do they particularly care for what we do.
Medicare Fact #2: Medicare Policy states, "The [chiropractic] provider is responsible to know the rules and regulations that apply to all services he/she bills to the Medicare program.”
